Advanced education is increasingly important in the diverse fields that make up homeland security. EKU offers one of the few programs in the nation based on curriculum developed by the Homeland Security and Defense Education Consortium and the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security. The Bureau of Labor and Statistics (BLS) projects protective service occupations to grow 3 percent before 2028, which will result in about 95,200 new jobs.

Curriculum

EKU’s online homeland security curriculum prepares students for a variety of rewarding career options at the local, state and national level.  Course topics include emergency management, physical security, critical infrastructure protection, risk analysis, homeland security technology, and disaster preparedness and response.

Degree Requirements

A total of 120 credits are required to graduate. Complete degree requirement information about the homeland security program is available in the University undergraduate catalog.

Transfer Credits

Students may transfer up to 90 hours of credit from accredited institutions. Please note that a minimum of 30 credit hours in this degree program must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.

HLS 301 – Critical Infrastructure Protection (3)
Identification, prioritization, and protection of critical infrastructure including information technology, telecommunications, chemical, transportation, energy, water, medical, emergency services, postal and shipping. Impact on personal safety and economic performance.

HLS 391 – Risk Analysis (3)
History and process of risk analysis and management (VRA) as it relates to the protection of critical assets and infrastructure. Instruction in common techniques used in both the public and private sectors.

HLS 441 – Homeland Security Technology (3)
Broad overview of homeland security technology. Technology as a tool to support homeland security regardless of functional specialty. Contribution of technology to deterrence, preemption, prevention, protection, and response.

HLS 465 – Unconventional Threats and Responses (3)
The course addresses concepts, theories, laws and authorities, principles, programs, and requirements associated with unconventional threats to our nation that most likely would result in mass casualties, and pose large-scale responses and cascading threats.
