Taylor Newton is a student in Eastern Kentucky University’s Master of Arts in Education – School Librarian program. Taylor is a high school science teacher for the Madison County School District in Kentucky. She is completing her Master of Arts in Education online and recently shared her thoughts about her EKU Online experience.

How has earning this degree changed or aided your career?

Pursuing this degree is leading to many new opportunities in my career field.  At the completion of this program, I will be more equipped to fulfill new roles within the school system as well as be a more well-rounded teacher for my students.

What motivated you to get this degree?

I was motivated to pursue this degree because the education world is continually moving forward toward a more technology-guided approach.  The school librarian is vital in the school’s integration of technology into the classroom.  I chose this program to study so that I could learn more about strategies for successfully educating my students on navigating the technological world.

What was your favorite part or the highlight of your time as an EKU Online student?

So far, my favorite part of my time in this EKU Online program is that I have been able to discuss with and learn from teachers from across the state!  With the online aspect, I am able to talk with my classmates in every module.  I have gained so much insight from reading their responses each week.

How did the EKU Online faculty aid in your success?

In balancing a full-time job and online workload, the faculty have been so helpful in their approach to presenting our work each week.  The professors have created modules with clear expectations and accommodating resources to set all of the students up for success.

What did you find surprising about the program?

I had never taken online courses, even during my undergraduate time at EKU. I was nervous to transition to this style of learning.  However, I was surprised to find all of the advantages to being a part of an online program! I am able to fit the coursework into my weekly schedule and be an active, engaged student!

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become an EKU Online student?

I would highly encourage anyone interested in pursuing an online degree to jump in and get started!  There are a variety of course load options to accommodate individual needs.  Any questions that you have, the faculty are eager to help!
