Curriculum

Our regionally accredited online program is made up of high-quality courses and taught by experienced professors dedicated to student success. EKU’s curriculum blends academic and professional preparation through course topics such as crisis intervention, addictions, and race and ethnic relations.

Degree Requirements

A minimum of 120 credits are required to graduate with a bachelor degree, including 42 upper-division credits.

Transfer Credits

Students may transfer up to 90 hours of credit from accredited institutions. Please note that a minimum of 30 credit hours in this degree program must be completed at Eastern Kentucky University.

Previously earned credits must be reviewed upon admittance to EKU for appropriate articulation. Learn more about transferring to EKU.

As required by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) standards, the EKU BSW/MSW program does not grant social work course credit for life experience or previous work experience

Sample Courses

SWK 310 – Social Welfare Policy History (3)
History of social welfare policy; its role and relationship with other social institutions; structure and function of U.S. system compared to other national systems; inequitable distribution of resources; and its contribution to an oppressive environment.

SWK 350 – Social Work Practice I (3)
Theoretical base for social work practice from a generalist perspective. Focuses on the social work process: problem identification; data collection and synthesis; assessment; planning and intervention; termination; and evaluation. Emphasis on multidimensional assessment and practice ethics.

 SWK 365 – Crisis Intervention (3)
This course will examine current theories pertaining to crisis intervention, assessment strategies, key public policy issues, and the treatment system. This course uses on-line discussion, presentations, and videos to facilitate learning.

SWK 440 – Addictions (3)   
This course will examine how to assess, intervene, and treat individuals, families, and groups with substance abuse and other addictions. The course will examine addictions from a strengths perspective.
