EKU Paralegal Program Residency
The Eastern Kentucky University paralegal program is one of approximately 260 ABA-approved paralegal programs (out of over 1,000 paralegal programs overall) in the United States. The ABA requires ABA-approved programs to go through a rigorous review process, ensuring that the programs meet the ABA’s stringent requirements for program quality. The ABA also requires students to complete 10 credit hours in a face-to-face format.
EKU’s paralegal programs are designed to offer you the flexibility to complete all but these 10 credit hours 100 percent online. The remaining 10 hours are earned in the form of an intensive, on-campus residency in Richmond, Kentucky.
This unique combination approach provides the flexibility you need to maintain personal and professional obligations, while allowing you an in-person opportunity to:
- Collaborate with fellow students
- Network with working paralegals and faculty
- Help you refine the fundamental skills employers value
- Receive personalized career counseling and job search workshops
When is the residency requirement offered?
The residency is offered once per year in late May on the Richmond, Kentucky campus. The residency duration is a little over two-weeks, running weekdays and weekends, with exact beginning and ending times to be determined prior to each session.
Students can choose to attend either the full residency toward the end of their program; or, split the residency over two May sessions.
What does the residency schedule look like?
See a sample residency schedule here.
What arrangements will I need to make?
If the student has family and/or work obligations, arrangements must be made accordingly by the student to ensure attendance (i.e. child care and/or requesting time off work).
A full itinerary and detailed information will be provided to students in early spring, prior to the start of the residency. Parking passes will be distributed on the first day of the residency.
Lodging is recommend for any student living more than an hour’s drive from Richmond, Kentucky. EKU’s residence halls will be made available to interested students at a nightly rate much lower than that of local hotels and motels. Details for the residence halls will be made available to students early in the spring term. If preferred, students can also choose to stay in a nearby hotel.
How much notice will I get that my residency is approaching?
A projected graduation track for each student will be available in their DegreeWorks audit planner approximately five weeks after starting the paralegal program. This will provide an advance notice of when the on-campus courses will be completed. It is the student’s responsibility to notify their academic advisor if they need to make adjustments to their graduation plan.
What will be covered during the residency?
During the residency students will complete 10 credit hours* of upper division paralegal coursework. The residency is divided into two parts and currently classes include (subject to change per departmental requirements):
- LAS 300W (3 credit hours): Legal Research and Writing II (a writing intensive course)
- LAS 325 (3 credit hours): Real Estate and Bankruptcy
- LAS 305 (1 credit hour): Paralegal Evidence and Trial Skills
- LAS 410 (3 credit hours): Paralegal Seminar
*There will be portions of work for these courses that must be completed BEFORE you arrive for the residency. Please consult your advisor if you have any questions about the work that must be completed in advance.
How do I register for the residency?
Students will register for the residency courses during regular spring semester registration. Online course work for the residency will begin when the Spring B term starts in March. Post-residency assignments such as research papers and final versions of course assignments will be due in the weeks following the residency.
Students may need to register for up to 19 credit hours for the final spring semester, depending on the degree completion path.
