Registered Nurses

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics* employment of registered nurses is projected to grow 12 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. An aging population, and an increase in chronic conditions, such as arthritis, dementia, diabetes, and obesity will lead to steady growth in this occupation.

Job opportunities in hospital settings will continue to increase, however the financial pressure on hospitals to discharge patients as soon as possible may result in more people being admitted to long-term care facilities and outpatient care centers, and greater need for healthcare at home. Job growth is expected in facilities that provide long-term rehabilitation for stroke and head injury patients, and in facilities that treat people with Alzheimer’s disease. In addition, because many older people prefer to be treated at home or in residential care facilities, registered nurses will be in demand in those settings.

Growth is also expected to be faster than average in outpatient care centers, where patients do not stay overnight, such as those which provide same-day chemotherapy, rehabilitation, and surgery. In addition, an increased number of procedures, as well as more sophisticated procedures previously done only in hospitals, are being performed in ambulatory care settings and physicians’ office.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statics reports the median pay of a registered nurse in 2018 to be $71,730 per year, or $34.48 per hour.

Nurse Practitioners

Family nurse practitioners are Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) educated to provide a full range of primary care services and are becoming a health care provider of choice for many people.  As clinicians with clinical expertise in diagnosing and treating health conditions with an added emphasis on disease prevention and health management, APRNs will be increasingly utilized in collaborative models of care.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics* employment of nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists and nurse midwives is projected to grow 26 percent from 2018 to 2028, much faster than the average for all occupations. Several factors will contribute to this demand, including an increased emphasis on preventive care and demand for healthcare services from the aging population. The median pay of a nurse practitioner in 2018 was $113,930 per year, or approximately $55 per hour.
