EKU Online Programs Honored with Blackboard Catalyst Awards

Eastern Kentucky University’s online degree programs continue to drive student success. The university was selected as a 2020 Blackboard Catalyst Award winner in four categories. Winners were chosen by a team of cross-functional experts. EKU has received a total of eight awards from Blackboard, Inc. since 2014.

This year, two EKU faculty and staff teams won in the Teaching and Learning category. The award recognizes quality programs that promote effectiveness and efficiency for both students and instructors. Senior Lecturer Patrick Coen, Lecturer James Grogan and Instructional Designer Mary Henson won for their work with the EKU Department of Mathematics and Statistics. The team from EKU’s online Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program was also honored – including Program Coordinator Rachael Hovermale, MSN, ARNP, DNP; Aileen Jones, ARNP-BC; Wanda France APRN-BC; Anna "Maurine" Hume and Instructional Designer Chris Daniel.

Instructional Designer Mikah Hughes and Assistant Professor Chad Foster won a 2020 Blackboard Exemplary Course Award for an online course they developed for the Homeland Security Program -- HLS 461 Disaster Resilience. Courses are judged on numerous criteria, including ease of navigation and opportunities for student engagement. EKU’s professional development efforts were also recognized. The Instructional Design Center won in the Training and Professional Development category honoring creative methods of teaching and organization-wide dedication to continued learning. Steve Dwinnells serves as the unit’s director, and Nedim Slijepcevic is the faculty development program manager.
