Sport Management Graduates Value Convenience and Support

EKU Online > Sport Management Graduates Value Convenience and Support

Destiny McClymont and Katie Palmer, both recent EKU online sport management graduates, found themselves making a switch in their educational journey that they hadn’t predicted was coming…the switch to online.

After both students attended classes on EKU’s campus, they found that the traditional classroom setting just wasn’t going to serve them in the way it did other students.

Destiny, pregnant with her little girl, found that her family demands required a new level of flexibility. After making the switch from athletic training to sport management because of the appeal that business had to her, she was able to complete her degree in the comfort of her home with her daughter by her side.

“I love online classes and [sport management] has been amazing for me because of the professors.”

She went on to explain that the diversity of career options that the sport management degree provided was a huge selling point for her. As someone who has a passion for helping others, this degree allowed her to pursue that passion through the love of sport. “You can be an athletic director. You can work for a nonprofit organization. You can do a lot of different things,” she said.

These are just some of the various career opportunities that can be pursued by sport management graduates. Other jobs include being an event coordinator, working in athletic administration, becoming an advisor to student athletes, and so many others.

Katie Palmer, EKU Online Sport Management Graduate

Katie had a different path to online education. “I was at EKU for three years before I switched online,” she explained, “I struggled in the traditional setting with ADHD, so I switched online, and it is the best thing I ever did.”

After having a hard time keeping up with the demands and requirements of a traditional classroom, Katie found success in online classes because of their accessible format. “Sports management classes had everything put in front of you from the beginning of the semester. You had an idea of everything that was going to be due and when it was going to be due.”

Katie went on to praise the support offered by faculty in the classroom and also the hands-on experience that her internship provided. “I had just kind of forgotten how much I loved being around sport until I went and did my internship.” The internship not only bolstered her love for working in the industry but gave her real-world experience and networking opportunities throughout undergrad, best preparing her for her future career.

When asked what her advice would be to students considering the digital switch, Katie said, “If you need a flexible working schedule, this is your niche.” She went on to advise students, “Don’t knock online classes until you try it. I loved going here [EKU] in person, and I loved going online. I love the professors and just the experience overall. Being a Colonel has been a big part of my life.”

Destiny enjoyed her time at EKU so much that she expressed, “I’m still debating if I want to start my master’s degree soon because I am going to miss school. I love EKU.”
