Kelsey Halcomb is a student in Eastern Kentucky University’s online master of social work (MSW) program. Sarah works for the Bluegrass Community Action Partnership as a Senior Companion Program Director and Senior Center Director. She is completing her MSW online and recently shared her thoughts about her EKU Online experience.

How has earning this degree changed or aided your career?

I completed my undergraduate studies at EKU and returned to finish my MSW. Working within the aging population, a major part of my job is advocating on their behalf. Senior citizens are one of our most vulnerable populations and completing my graduate social work courses has given me the skills and continued education needed to thrive in my field.

What motivated you to get this degree?

I have always had a passion for the aging community. During the pandemic, I had my first child and finished undergrad. I had every intention of remaining a stay-at-home mom and wife, but I felt the need to contribute to society and its vulnerable populations. I got a job with my current employer and moved up quickly. My current supervisor, an MSW, has inspired me to continue my education through her work in our aging department.

What was your favorite part or the highlight of your time as an EKU Online student?

Being able to complete my coursework at home has been one of the greatest parts of being an EKU Online student. I work full-time and have a family. Going to school in-person is just not an option for my current lifestyle, and I am very thankful to have the opportunity to further my education through this route.

How did the EKU Online faculty aid in your success?

EKU MSW faculty have been amazing in reaching out with opportunities for trainings, scholarships, internships, and practicums. Additionally, the coursework is pertinent to what social work actually looks like in the workforce, and I find myself being able to effectively utilize the skills taught in my work now.

What did you find surprising about the program?

The staff and professors are always willing to work with you and are truly pushing for your success. I have had professors in the past while finishing my associates who were unavailable in every sense of the term, so I am grateful to have professors that are willing to take time out of their days to meet with you and address any concerns you may have.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become an EKU Online student?

Talk to your advisor. This has been so beneficial to my success and has allowed me to stay on track while also taking advantage of opportunities like scholarships and honor societies.
