Aaron Boycan graduated with a master’s degree in public administration from Eastern Kentucky University. He works as an Investigations and Support Services Captain for the City of Berea in Kentucky. He completed his degree online and recently shared his thoughts about his EKU Online experience.

How has earning this degree changed or aided your career?

Earning my Master of Public Administration degree has helped me become a more well-rounded police officer. The content areas of the degree helped me become more well versed in areas such as leadership, human resources, public budgeting, and comprehending statistical analysis. Knowledge in these areas have helped me become a better police officer at an administrative level.

What motivated you to get your degree in public administration?

I felt this degree would help me advance in my career field while simultaneously achieving my goal of earning a degree that was not criminal justice specific. At times life throws you a curveball and you may not be able to continue in your chosen field. Being educationally diverse helps open up a wider range of options. 

How did the EKU Online faculty aid in your success?

All of the EKU faculty, from the professors to the advisors, were well versed in their areas of responsibility and went above and beyond to make sure I was successful. The graduate advisor was extremely helpful in helping me map out which classes to take during the term to make sure I completed all the requirements of the degree in the timeframe I desired. I was able to take summer term classes in order to complete my degree faster 

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become an EKU Online student?

Being an EKU Online student allows you the flexibility to complete coursework while being a full time professional. At times balancing both work and school can be difficult, but the online setting allows so many options of when you complete your coursework. If you are wondering if you have time to work and complete your degree, I promise you do. It can be tough, but it is very rewarding.
