Brandon Campbell is a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University’s master of public administration program. He works as a budget manager for Kentucky River Foothills Development Council, Inc. He recently shared his thoughts about his EKU Online experience.
How has earning this degree changed or aided your career?
The MPA program gave me a broader perspective on community development and the role of non-profit agencies in their respective communities. In addition, the program assisted me in developing tools applicable to the industry like writing, budgeting, statistics, and program evaluation.
What motivated you to get this degree?
During my time as an undergraduate I took a class titled Appalachian Development with a professor who was instrumental in helping me explore my career interests. After taking that class I decided I wanted to work in the community development field, so the Master of Public Administration program was a natural choice.
What was your favorite part or the highlight of your time as an EKU student?
Even though I learned a lot about community development and improved a lot of skills that helped me in my career, the relationships I developed with a few classmates and professors have had the largest positive impact.
What did you find surprising about the program?
The most surprising aspect of the program was the diversity of educational backgrounds my classmates brought to discussions in class.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become an EKU Online student?
I would advise incoming students that even though they will not be attending in-person classes to be as engaged as possible in their discussions and work to develop relationships with their professors and classmates.
