EKU Online > Colonel Catch Up: Carla Patton, Master’s Degree in Instructional Design and Learning Technology

Shortly after beginning her master’s degree in instructional design and learning technology Carla Patton received a job offer to start her career as an instructional designer. Carla is completing her degree 100% online with Eastern Kentucky University.  She recently shared her thoughts about her EKU Online experience.

How has earning this degree changed or aided your career?

My first few classes in the program helped me secure my first job in the field as an Instructional Designer. Without it, I wouldn’t have known what I was doing or been a serious candidate.

What motivated you to get this degree?

I had the benefit of knowing both program founders as the program was being developed, and even assisted in program development as a staff member, I knew I was interested in instructional design, and that the program was going to be high quality. I also knew that Drs. Slijepcevic and Daniel were genuinely invested in the success of their students, and that the program was geared toward practical, project-based experiences.

What is your favorite part or the highlight of your time as an EKU student?

So far, my favorite part of the program has been the practical application of the principles that we have learned. Students and program faculty work hard together to learn in community and provide thoughtful, constructive feedback to one another to enhance everyone’s learning.

How did the EKU Online faculty aid in your success?

My faculty have been immensely supportive and available- from helping me with last minute portfolio creation for a job application (for my role now) to practical, direct, and kind project feedback, the faculty in this program are some of the best instructors I’ve ever had.

What did you find surprising about the program?

I’m surprised in every class that we complete how much ground we cover and how much I learn. It’s very satisfying to see my own progress and that of my peers as we learn together.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become an EKU Online student?

If you’re interested in being an EKU Online student- ask questions! Staff and faculty want to see you matched with a good program and are dedicated to your success from start to finish. The classes are intense, and you will work hard- but that’s the point. You will learn so much while you’re working.
