Mashell Rena Carmack is a recent graduate from EKU Online’s homeland security bachelor’s degree program. Mashell is a Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) information coordinator for The Miami County Emergency Management Agency in Ohio. She recently shared her thoughts about her EKU Online experience.
How has earning this degree changed or aided your career?
The value this degree has added to my ability to obtain a job with the federal government is enormous. I have really enjoy learning and have considered getting my masters.
What motivated you to get this degree?
I started at EKU right out of high school in 1984 but didn’t complete my degree. I have always regretted not finishing it. After my kids went off to college, I decided to pick up where I left off so 38 years later, I will have my degree.
What was your favorite part or the highlight of your time as an EKU Online student?
I like being a student again and collaborating with others, makes me feel like I really started all over.
How did the EKU Online faculty aid in your success?
I can’t say enough good things about the faculty. I have been given assistance every time that I asked. They genuinely wanted me to succeed and provided all the resources available.
What did you find surprising about the program?
The program gave me a lot of insight into other areas within my degree that I didn’t choose as a career path, however the knowledge was invaluable for understanding the whole picture.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become an EKU Online student?
Learning online was a struggle in the beginning, however it didn’t take long to figure it out and become comfortable with the process. The flexibility was key to making it fit into my busy life.
