One of the most beneficial ways to advance your career is to be involved in relevant professional organizations. Professional organizations offer the opportunity for you to gain leadership skills, stay current with emerging industry topics, and expand your network both locally and beyond. The Kentucky Health Information Management Association (KHIMA) is the local chapter association of the national organization, AHIMA (American Health Information Management Association). Students are encouraged to take advantage of all the benefits that KHIMA has to offer for student members.
Annual Meeting with Specific Student Track
KHIMA holds an annual meeting that includes tracks specific for students and two days of general sessions for all attendees. The student track sessions will offer education on relevant topics for students beginning their career. Students are able to register for the meeting for a heavily reduced fee. KHIMA student members receive an additional discount on registration.
Student Ambassador Program
This program awards up to four students the opportunity to serve as Student Ambassadors for our annual KHIMA meeting. These students serve in an honorary position and get the chance to network with active KHIMA professionals while assisting with meeting functions. KHIMA student members are eligible to apply for one of these distinguished positions.
Scholarship Opportunities
Each year KHIMA offers opportunities for student members to submit applications and potentially receive scholarships up to $1,500.
Credentials Exam Reimbursement
For instance, one of our greatest financial benefits is that all KHIMA student members are eligible for reimbursement for the cost of a successfully passed RHIA or RHIT exam (within 6 months of graduation and pending proper documentation provided).
Leadership Opportunities
Students involved with KHIMA have the opportunity to learn about the organization and transition to an active member after graduation. Active members have the opportunity to become committee members, committee chairs, and run for additional Board positions. In addition, they also enjoy all the active member benefits.
In conclusion, my own experience with KHIMA is positive. I first joined as a student member and after earning my RHIA credential, I was able to have the exam fee reimbursed through KHIMA. Since that time, I have attended several annual meetings, served on committees, and currently serve as the Student Engagement Committee Chair. In the future, I plan to consider a Board of Directors position and continue my growth within the organization. During my time with KHIMA, I have the opportunity to network with so many individuals I may not have met otherwise. Membership in AHIMA/KHIMA offers educational sessions, informational resources, job banks, leadership opportunities, and the ability to be a part of a community of like-minded professionals.
Students are able to join KHIMA for a low price of only $49. To become a member of KHIMA please visit www.khima.org.
