Bryan O’Neil graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in fire protection administration. Bryan is a fire lieutenant for the City of Cambridge in Massachusetts. He completed his bachelor’s degree online and recently shared his thoughts about his EKU Online experience.
How has earning this degree changed or aided your career?
Professional development in the fire service is relatively new, especially when compared to other professions. My EKU degree has prepared me to be a more competent and confident leader. With the leadership tools I gained during my time at EKU I am better able to evaluate emergency situations and keep my team and civilians safe under dangerous circumstances. I am also better equipped to evaluate our performance and suggest administrative and policy changes to improve the services that we deliver to our community.
What motivated you to get this degree?
Professional development and the desire to be in a position to effect change.
What was your favorite part or the highlight of your time as an EKU Online student?
The personal relationships I was able to develop with other students and professors. Some students were in classes with me for all four years.
How did the EKU Online faculty aid in your success?
By being both available when I needed them and having real world experience to craft their advice and guidance, they were an invaluable resource.
What did you find surprising about the program?
The sense of an on-campus education on my schedule. As an adult learner, I was suspicious of online education but the system at EKU allowed me to be successful even while working full time.
What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become an EKU Online student?
Spend the appropriate amount of time researching your major and the commitment required. Be sure to set yourself up to be successful. Utilize all of the tools that EKU provides.
