Why Minor in Communication Studies?

EKU Online > Why Minor in Communication Studies?

Do you have extra hours in your schedule? Are you looking to give yourself an edge in the job market? Fulfill your graduation requirements and gain crucial skills beneficial for any career with a communication studies minor.

Tailor Your Communication Studies Minor to Your Interests

A communication studies minor requires 18 credit hours that can be tailored to fit your unique interests. All students must complete CMS 200: Interpersonal Communication, CMS 310: Team Building and Small Group Communication, and CMS 350: Organizational Communication. But the remaining nine credit hours can be chosen from communication studies elective courses, such as applied communication skills for professionals, social media for organizations, and intercultural communication.

Communication Studies Courses Offer a Great Professional Foundation

After completing a communication studies minor, you will be able to effectively communicate in the workplace. For example, in CMS 275: Applied Organizational Communication, students participate in a mock interview, create a resume, and practice professional feedback and employee evaluations. This experience allows students to enter their careers with the knowledge needed to navigate traditionally uncomfortable workplace necessities.

Communication Skills Among Top Three Skills Valued by Employers

Leadership skills, the ability to work in a team, and written communication skills are consistently recognized as three top attributes employers are seeking in college graduates. Students will build excellent written communication skills and leadership skills in all communication studies minor courses, as well as learn to thrive as part of a team in CMS 310 Team Building and Small Group Communication.
