After graduating with her bachelor’s degree in communication, Lacy applied to the University of Kentucky Law School, one of the most selective law schools in the country according to the Princeton Review. “I still have my letter of acceptance hanging on my wall,” she said proudly.

“I attribute my success to the EKU Communication Studies major and the faculty in the EKU Communication Department,” said EKU graduate Lacy Griffith Andrews. “My dreams have become bigger than I could ever imagine.”

Law school was challenging, but she felt prepared thanks to her degree in communication. “I might not have always been the strongest student, but I had work ethic and was always able to do the practical things, like trial team, with ease. That was a big confidence booster for me!,” she said.

Students with a passion for writing, public speaking or negotiation often choose the communications degree. Courses in team building, organizational communication and conflict management help them identify and build upon their strengths. Critical thinking skills and leadership skills allow them to broaden their career opportunities. “The possibilities are unlimited,” said Lacy.

Her EKU experience provided essential skills that gave her a competitive edge in law school. “You learn the basics of communication, how to ask questions, how to deal with difficult situations, and how to present yourself in any given situation. Once you have those basics (and they are essential!) you’re prepared for anything,” she said.

After graduation, she worked for an insurance defense firm. Then she served as a public defender. Today, she’s an assistant commonwealth attorney for the 29th judicial circuit of Kentucky.

“This position is such an honor and a privilege for me. It will allow me to remain in the courtroom and serve the citizens of my hometown, in Casey County, and our neighboring Adair County.”

What can you do with a degree in communication? Lacy laid the foundation for her law career, and she will always be thankful that she chose EKU. “These are skills that you will continue to use and build upon. You communicate for your entire life! You need these skills, and EKU’s professors are the experts,” she said.
