EKU Online Graduate Sarah Kelley, Communications Studies

Sarah Kelly graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in communication studies. Sarah is currently a student services program coordinator for the University of Louisville. She completed her bachelor’s degree online and recently shared her thoughts about her EKU Online experience.

How has earning this degree changed or aided your career?

The skills I learned in communication studies have been invaluable. Working within a large organization, I call on my team building and small group communication every day and taking intercultural communication has allowed me to serve our international student population more effectively. I often find myself thinking “oh yeah— we learned about this in ______ class!”

What motivated you to get this degree?

I wanted to learn transferable skills that would let me take a number of career paths. I also like the process of communicating complex ideas in a way that is easy to understand.

What was your favorite part or the highlight of your time as an EKU Online student?

I had supportive faculty that encouraged me to open my mind and learn.

How did the EKU Online faculty aid in your success?

They provided resources and advice for working through course content. I always felt that my faculty cared about me.

What did you find surprising about the program?

“Communication” is an even broader concept than it sounds. There is a lot to learn, and you can specialize in many areas.

What advice would you give to someone who is looking to become an EKU Online student?

You get out of it what you are willing to put in.
