EKU Graduate Finishes Degree Started in 1970s

EKU Online General Studies student Debbie Yerian

Debbie Yerian was an EKU student in 1974. She met her husband, left Richmond and set aside her dream of graduating.

Thanks to EKU Online, she walked across the stage to receive her bachelor’s degree from EKU in 2015.

“I could have gotten a degree online from 100 places,” she said, “but the important thing to me was that it felt like a real degree from a real school.”

The day before graduation, Debbie received the “Outstanding Undergraduate Student Award” at a ceremony on the Eastern Kentucky University campus in Richmond, Kentucky.

Yerian, who is from Columbus, Ohio, received an emotional standing ovation from EKU Online faculty and staff who attended the event.

“Thank you for creating a way for me to walk tomorrow from the university I started from,” she told the audience.

Family members, including her mother and children, attended graduation the following day to watch her receive her diploma.
